Care After Abdominal Surgery

Recovery after abdominal colorectal surgery is gradual. These general guidelines support healing; your discharge instructions always take priority if they differ.

Activity

  • Limit activity the day of surgery; walk short distances as encouraged to reduce clot risk.
  • Gradually increase activity as tolerated over the following days and weeks.
  • Avoid heavy lifting until your surgeon clears you.

Pain control

Some discomfort is expected. Take prescribed pain medication with food as directed. Over-the-counter options may be allowed — confirm with the team before combining medicines.

Diet and bowel function

Advance your diet as instructed (often from liquids toward regular food). Stay hydrated. Bowel habits can take time to normalize after colorectal surgery.

Wound care

Keep incisions clean and dry as directed. Report increasing redness, drainage, or opening of the wound.

Call the office for fever over 100.4°F, severe or worsening pain, persistent vomiting, inability to pass gas or stool when expected, leg swelling, or chest pain / shortness of breath (seek emergency care for severe symptoms).
