From open surgery to minimally invasive care
In the past, surgeons made large incisions in skin and muscle so they could directly see and work on the area of concern. This is called open surgery. Today, many colorectal procedures can also be performed using minimally invasive laparoscopic or robotic-assisted techniques.
Both approaches use a few small incisions to insert instruments and a camera. In laparoscopic surgery, the surgeon operates with long-handled tools while viewing magnified images on a video screen.

The da Vinci system
Da Vinci surgical systems have three main components:
- Surgeon console — where the surgeon sits and controls the instruments with precision and filtered tremor
- Patient cart — the robotic arms at the bedside holding the instruments
- Vision cart — high-definition, magnified 3D visualization of the operative field
This combination supports careful dissection in tight spaces in the pelvis and abdomen — particularly valuable for colon and rectal operations.
