Some patients are instructed to use a two-day bowel preparation for colonoscopy. A clean colon is essential for a complete, accurate exam.
Why a two-day prep?
Your care team may recommend a longer prep if you have a history of incomplete prep, chronic constipation, or other factors that make the colon harder to clean. Always follow the written instructions provided to you.
General principles
- Shift to clear liquids as directed (usually the day before, and sometimes earlier).
- Avoid red, blue, and purple liquids.
- Take prep medications and solutions exactly on the schedule given to you.
- Stay near a bathroom once the prep starts working.
- Arrange a responsible adult to drive you home after the procedure.
Important: If you cannot finish the prep or vomit the solution, call the office before canceling on your own — the team can often advise next steps.
Medications and conditions
Patients with diabetes, kidney disease, or those on blood thinners need individualized instructions. Bring a full medication list to your pre-procedure discussion.
