Rubber band ligation is a convenient, non-surgical option for many people with internal hemorrhoids.
How it works
Using an anoscope for visualization, the hemorrhoid is grasped and a small rubber band is placed at its base. The band cuts off the blood supply. Over about a week, the hemorrhoid shrinks, dies, and falls off.
Why it is done
It is one of the most widely used office treatments for internal hemorrhoids. It is relatively quick, avoids the operating room for many patients, and can be repeated if needed. If symptoms persist after several treatments, surgery may be discussed.
How well it works
Rubber band ligation helps a large share of patients; success improves with carefully selected cases and, when needed, more than one session. A minority of people eventually need surgical hemorrhoid treatment.
